Graphics Elective Project

Here are some of the ideas that Wits 2nd years came up with for the Furniture Design project.

Furniture Design Students were briefed to design and fabricate a table using 1mm birch aircraft plywood as our main medium. This material has an amazing quality of flexibility which I exploited in my organic flower-inspired design. The folded sheets also reflect the shiny and silky texture which the plywood has, I likened this to the petals of a flower. The ends are joined by a piano hinge that runs from the top to the bottom and is fastened with rivets. Just as the sun gives life to the plant through the process of photosynthesis, the core of the table is metallic, holding all the radial elements together and reflecting the centre power within.

Picasso Exercise

1) Digital Photograph
2) Acrylic Painting
3) & 4) SketchUp

Inspired by a viewing at Picasso and Africa and the Standard Bank Art Gallery, I rendered a self portrait using acrylic paints from a reference of a digital photograph. The image was then scanned in and the picture plane manipulated in SketchUp to create 3-dimensional volumes.
